{"id":2049,"date":"2016-03-19T12:43:05","date_gmt":"2016-03-19T16:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fleeptuque.com\/blog\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2016-03-19T12:43:05","modified_gmt":"2016-03-19T16:43:05","slug":"morning-coffee-reading-31916","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fleeptuque.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/morning-coffee-reading-31916\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Coffee Reading &#8211; 3\/19\/16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blogging became too time-consuming. \u00c2\u00a0Formatting, linking, embedding, bad copy pasta that has to be fixed. \u00c2\u00a0But I&#8217;ll try again, because my network continues to inspire me so much, I feel I should make the effort as they do. \u00c2\u00a0Bless their hearts, what would I read in the morning if they got lazy like me?<\/p>\n<p>And, I remain forever amazed at\u00c2\u00a0how wonderful tripping, linking, chasing, stumbling through others&#8217; thoughts on the internets can be, and how sharing our thoughts can further other people&#8217;s trips in (hopefully) meaningful ways.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my latest trip to go with your morning coffee.<\/p>\n<h2>Badges and evidence, the &#8220;reputation economy&#8221;, and data used to make decisions<\/h2>\n<p>Sparked by insomniac reading of Stephen Downing (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oldaily\" target=\"_blank\">@oldaily<\/a>) at 4AM earlier this week, I saw that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.downes.ca\/presentation\/378\" target=\"_blank\">he gave a keynote address<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/avacon.org\" target=\"_blank\">AvaCon grid<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/vwbpe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education 2016 conference<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0wherein he speculates, &#8220;about the future of virtual worlds in learning when they are mixed with mobile devices and performance support systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scanning past Stephen&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0blurb about the VWBPE keynote, somehow\u00c2\u00a0I came across Alan Levine&#8217;s (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cogdog\" target=\"_blank\">@cogdog<\/a>) recent post &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/cogdogblog.com\/2016\/02\/badge-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seeking Evidence of Badge Evidence<\/a>&#8220;, wherein he explores the usefulness of gamified badging systems if they don&#8217;t link to actual evidence that the badge was earned. \u00c2\u00a0Metadata about the evidence isn&#8217;t the same as linking to the evidence itself, right? \u00c2\u00a0Right.<\/p>\n<p>This sparked a memory of an older post of mine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fleeptuque.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/twitter-and-the-reputation-economy-in-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter and the Reputation Economy in 2014<\/a>, wherein I mused about how to measure &#8220;reputation&#8221; and suggested that Twitter Lists provide a non-obvious measure of something. \u00c2\u00a0Alan subsequently pointed out that a Twitter list wordcloud may be an\u00c2\u00a0<em>indicator,\u00c2\u00a0<\/em> but it is not a\u00c2\u00a0<em>measure.<\/em> \u00c2\u00a0Good point.<\/p>\n<p>My tweet about Alan&#8217;s post sparked D&#8217;Arcy Norman (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dlnorman\" target=\"_blank\">@dlnorman<\/a>) to point to Cory Doctorow&#8217;s (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/doctorow\" target=\"_blank\">@doctorow<\/a>) recent post about what a terrible currency reputation would be.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fleep\">@fleep<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cogdog\">@cogdog<\/a> interesting. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/doctorow\">@doctorow<\/a> recently wrote that reputation would be a terrible currency <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h5mMDyOPOy\">https:\/\/t.co\/h5mMDyOPOy<\/a> (read Down and Out<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d D\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Arcy Norman (@dlnorman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dlnorman\/status\/710107854091345920\">March 16, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I agree that <a href=\"http:\/\/craphound.com\/down\/2016\/03\/04\/whuffie-would-be-a-terrible-currency\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whuffie would be a terrible currency<\/a>, so be sure to read that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/doctorow\" target=\"_blank\">@doctorow<\/a> post, as well as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.locusmag.com\/Perspectives\/2016\/03\/cory-doctorow-wealth-inequality-is-even-worse-in-reputation-economies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wealth Inequality Is Even Worse in Reputation Economies<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>My tweet\u00c2\u00a0also sparked Alan to go down a deep, technically complicated but fascinating rabbit-hole of what my Twitter list wordcloud means, whether it&#8217;s useful, and how to generate one using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">docker<\/a>, which I still don&#8217;t really understand.<\/p>\n<p>But go read his post &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/cogdogblog.com\/2016\/03\/measurement-or-indicators\/\" target=\"_blank\">Measurement or [indirect] Indicators of Reputation? A Twitter List \/ Docker \/ iPython Notebook Journey<\/a>&#8220;. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s good stuff.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of all that chain, I summed up my current take-aways about data used for decision-making\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cogdogblog.com\/2016\/03\/measurement-or-indicators\/#comment-987363\" target=\"_blank\">on a comment to his post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n1) measurements and indicators are not the same thing, important point.<\/p>\n<p>2) reliability is key, whether of a measure or indicator.<\/p>\n<p>3) the use-case (type of decision you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re making) should drive the type of data used to make your measurement or indicator.<\/p>\n<p>4) a measurement or indicator created for one use case may not transfer to a different use case.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Metaverse Vocabulary Words &#8211;
