{"id":516,"date":"2008-08-14T22:12:10","date_gmt":"2008-08-15T03:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fleeep.net\/blog\/?p=516"},"modified":"2008-08-14T22:12:10","modified_gmt":"2008-08-15T03:12:10","slug":"hype-cycle-and-james-paul-gee-building-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fleeptuque.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/hype-cycle-and-james-paul-gee-building-worlds\/","title":{"rendered":"Hype Cycle and James Paul Gee &#8220;Building Worlds&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gartner Emerging Tech <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hype_cycle\" title=\"Hype cycle\" rel=\"wikipedia\" class=\"zem_slink\">Hype Cycle<\/a> &#8211; August 2008<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtualworldsnews.com\/2008\/08\/qa-jackie-fenn.html\">Virtual World News<\/a> alerted me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/\">Gartner&#8217;s<\/a> latest &#8220;Emerging Technology&#8221; Hype Cycle analysis, and I was a bit surprised to see where they placed public virtual worlds, particularly in relation to Web 2.0 and wikis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.virtualworldtimes.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/08\/13\/gartnerhypecycleforemergingtechnolo.jpg\" title=\"Gartner Emerging Tech Hype Cycle - August 2008\" class=\"alignnone\" width=\"546\" height=\"442\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Gartner shows wikis far out in front of Web 2.0 generally and Web 2.0 and public virtual worlds neck and neck.  I don&#8217;t think I agree with that analysis if applied to an educational context.  Based on my experience in the field, I&#8217;d have put Web 2.0 and wikis much closer together and before the peak of Inflated Expectations, and put virtual worlds even further behind. In the interview, he discusses how video games and virtual worlds can be used to help address some of the major deficiencies in modern educational systems &#8211; letting learners produce the lesson content instead of just &#8220;taking it in&#8221; and how virtual worlds help kids develop complex literacies through experiential and situated learning.
